Mementos of the war
World War II deeply affected Wedad Frenn, a young Lebanese-American woman from Detroit, MI, whose two brothers and boyfriend were called up. Eager to play her part in the war effort, she wrote to about 40 soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Many of the servicemen--stationed in Europe, the Pacific, North Africa, or stateside--reciprocated by sending her memorabilia fashioned out of everything from seashells to artillery shells. The objects she collected range from a carved-bone pin depicting a sphinx, a pyramid, and a camel--probably sent from a serviceman based in the Allied headquarters in Cairo, Egypt--to a presidential campaign pin of the Democratic candidate, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
