Framed Display of Presidential Hair
1850s
"Locks of hair from distinguished heads"
This framed display of "locks of hair from distinguished heads" features the hair of 14 presidents of the United States, from George Washington to Franklin Pierce. Such curiosities were not uncommon in the mid-1800s, a time when Americans often collected hair from both famous figures and loved ones and incorporated it into memorial jewelry, photographs, and other keepsakes. This popular example once hung in the collections of the Patent Office.
